Useful Tips
FILTERS!
Clean or replace your air filter regularly. The number one thing you can do to increase the life and efficiency of your air conditioning and
heating system is to clean or replace your filter.
1" fiberglass or polyester filters should be replaced monthly. A good reminder is your monthly electric bill. When you receive your electric
bill each month, try to associate that with changing your air filter.
1" pleated filters usually have a denser filter media, catch smaller particles of dust and therefor are better filters. Although pleated
filters should be checked monthly, they have more surface area and may not need to be changed every month.
5" filters such as AprilAire and Perfect Fit are excellent filters and in
most homes can last up to one year.
THERMOSTATS!
Along with GRU, Nottingham Air Conditioning recommends that you set your
thermostat to 68 degrees or below for heating and 78 degrees or above for
cooling. It can cost you 4% more in energy costs for every degree you set
your thermostat beyond the recommended setting. For example, if you were
to set your thermostat at 73 degrees all year long it would cost you 20%
more to cool and heat your home.
Thermostats these days are getting fancy with all kinds of features. Some
of them are actually helpful. Among the many better features of modern
thermostats are digital numbers and electronic components. You can
actually see the setting and the temperature in the room. These
thermostats are accurate and do not usually require calibration. Touch
screen thermostats are gaining in popularity. Although touch screens are
a bit more expensive, they are very reliable and convenient.
